The Holy Cross theater arts program begins in Pre-Kindergarten and continues through 6th grade. All grades perform a live musical/theatrical performance every year.
Pre-K and Kindergarten classes work together to produce a Spring Production which includes songs and memorized speaking parts in a wonderful, age-appropriate production. Productions in years past have been “Ee-I-Ee-I-Oops” and “Bugs.”
First and second grades produce the school’s Christmas production every year to the delight of parents and students alike.
Third graders enhance their study of the United States by performing a Veteran’s Day production which concentrates on Patriotic songs of America’s past and present. They also perform the songs associated with the divisions of America’s Armed Forces. After performing for the student-body and parents, students take the show on the road to the local VA Hospital to perform for men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.
The “Shakespeare Can Be Fun” program is geared for grades 4,5, and 6. Each class produces and performs a kid-friendly version of William Shakespeare’s plays written by Canadian author, Lois Burdett. The 4th grade performs “Twelfth Night for Kids” in their classroom for delighted parents and grandparents. The 5th grade enjoys producing “Much Ado About Nothing for Kids” for the student-body and families in the Chapel of Annunciation. For the 6th grade production of “Midsummer Night’s Dream for Kids,” Holy Cross employs a Shakespearean actor from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival to direct the students and teach them the finer points of Theater Arts, including diction, and stage movement. The play has been performed for the last three years in the Shakespeare Garden located at ASF.
